The History
We use to say that KWA (Kalmar Whisky Academy) was founded in 1997 by Stefan and Leif on a ferry between Halmstad and Grenå on their way for a vacation with their families to Jylland (Denmark). Stefan and Leif were a little bit bored on the long boat trip and were spending some time at the duty free shop. In the shop a head with the whisky rack an idea came up… “If we by two bottle of whisky each we can set up a whisky tournament”. Said and done with two bottles each, Scottish blended of course (malt and other stuff came up some year later) they reached Jylland.
Stefan and Leif are some kind of sport freaks who like to compete in everything and make lists. The competition form was then quite clear from the start. The whiskies challenge each other in matches and rounds. In some rounds the list was ready and a winner of the tournament was nominated. This type of tournament became good tradition in the closest years on our families’ trips together.
The activity
The activity in KWA these days are many: organize tastings, visiting tastings, visiting whisky exhibitions and organize and go on whisky travels. One of the tastings forms is still in these days the “tournament” form that KWA set up once a year.
