In 2016, KWA on the “Campbeltown and Lowland” tour visited Springbank. Far south on the Kintyre Peninsula, in the small town of Campbeltown, Springbank Distillery has its domicile. If there is any town that really dates back to when it comes to making whiskey, it’s Cambeltown. Once upon a time, there were 28 producers of whisky here and Campbeltown was claiming the title as the world’s “whisky capital”. In these days there are only three distilleries left. If you want to see from scratch how whisky is made you should go to Springbank. At Springbank you can see and follow every step of whisky making, from malting to bottling. The process control is done by hand and no computer control is allowed, which makes it easy to follow and understand the process. Springbank distills the spirit two and a half times, and the spirit is neither chill-filtered nor does it have any color added. Distilling whisky two and a half times is quite unusual as it means that some of the low wines during the distillation process are collected before the second distillation and then mixed back into the feints for another distillation. At Springbank continuity and tradition are important things that contribute to good products.

The distillery has the same owner (J&A Mitchell & Co. Ltd.) as Cadenhead´s (an Independent Whisky Bottler) which has its advantages, as they can organize excellent tastings as they did when we visited them (red. Journeys, Tastings).

If you have the opportunity to visit Springbank do not hesitate…
